Help Needed : How to export your CF server settings?

On January 23, 2008, in ColdFusion, by Anuj Gakhar

I need some help with this particular problem I have. How do you migrate over all your datasources/mappings/scheduled tasks etc from one Coldfusion server to another. I know you can do it by exporting the .car file but thats only if you have a enterprise edition of CF. Also, how to do this from Coldfusion 5 to Coldfusion 8?

I have done my search on this and havent been able to find anything. I have already started writing a little import/export tool to do exactly the same but I was wondering if anyone else has something I could use ? I am particularly interested in doing this from CF5 to CF8.

Thanks in advance for everyone who responds.

  1. Enterprise and Developer edition can both do it. So, I don’t bother putting in my serial number for standard until I get all the settings transferred over.

@Todd, that would work for CFMX I beleive. How about CF5? any ideas?

  3. Only one way to do it and that’s to kick your CF5 standard to a non-licensed server. I’m assuming this isn’t going to be feasible.

I really wish Allaire/Macromedia thought this through a little better. For the love of pete, why are settings not transferable between ALL servers?! 😛 You’d think they were scraping at the bottom of the idea jar for money makers.

Anyway, sorry, I wish I could help, but that’s all the information I can contribute. I know the datasource issue is going to be a pain in the rear because the difference between CF5 datasource setup and CF6+ aren’t the same. In fact, CF6 setup is different from CF7/8 setup as well as they split the XML file into 2 parts.

Thanks Todd. I thought that was the case, just wanted to ask around to make sure. By the way, even if you make your CF server a non-licensed version, how would that help? Sorry if thats a silly question, I am just knackered after a long day.

  5. Kicking it into non-licensed reverts it to a developer edition. Developer & Enterprise editions are able to use CAR files to import/export.

  6. Anuj Gakhar says:

But I dont think CF5 supports CAR files.

  7. Honestly, I don’t remember. We’re running a CF5 box, but it’s a standard version and also a production box, so I can’t do anything to it to check for you.

  8. Anuj Gakhar says:

Ofcourse Todd, I dont even expect you to play with your production box. Thanks for your help.

  9. I have no idea if this would work, but what if you upgraded the CF 5 standard server to CF 8 Developer, and if the settings get properly copied over then you’d just have to make a .CAR file to distribute to where ever you need them…

  10. Anuj Gakhar says:

@Aaron, Thanks for the suggestion. However, that would not be an option as CF 5 box is a produciton box and needs to run as well until everything is migrated.

As an update here, I havent been able to find anything that would solve my problem and the only option left is to do it all manually on the new server which is a shame . Adobe should come up with some kind of import/export tool for standard versions as well. And I think there are still a lot of CF5 users out there and there should be some tool to migrate your settings from CF5 is you decide to upgrade to CF8 etc…

  12. Hi Anuj,
did you get the idea , how to export all settings from CF 5 to CF 8.

    really interested to know.
